Secret Superstar destined to be super hit

By: TobyWilsdon

Star’s secret’s out
It looks like Aamir Khan has another definite winner on his hands with his latest home production Secret Superstar, which releases in cinemas globally on October 19. Someone I trust has seen the movie and told me it is outstanding. Dangal star Zaira Waseem plays a young girl trying to follow her singing dream with Aamir Khan portraying an egotistical mentor who helps her along the way in what will be next month’s must watch Bollywood film.

Kapoors stay mum
The Kapoor family won’t allow a biopic of Raj Kapoor to be made while his wife Krishna is still alive. The late great legend was arguably the most all-round talented star in the history of Indian cinema. He was an actor, producer, director and musician. He built his own studio during his remarkable rise and introduced newcomers who would become legends. But he was also a heavy drinker and had a number of high profile affairs including with various leading ladies, including Nargis.

Varun boxes clever
Actor Varun Dhawan shared this topless photo of himself from Budapest on social media to show off how hard he had been training, but got unexpectedly trolled for the cheap brand of underwear he was wearing. The Judwaa 2 star gave the perfect reply by saying he liked the underwear because it was very comfortable and affordable.

Full Asian breakfast
Now that BBC Asian Network has fired Tommy Sandhu they will be looking for a long-term replacement for his popular breakfast show slot. I think a great choice would be Raj Ghai and Sonia Dutta, who have done a great job on a fraction of the budget BBC Asian Network has on their Sunrise Radio breakfast show. They are not only entertaining, but connected to the grassroots of the community, a demographic the BBC Asian Network has consistently failed to reach with their flagship shows. If they go internally then rapidly rising star Harpz Kaur is a good choice, but she needs producers who can bring out the very best in her, which I don’t think she has right now.

Stick to the script
The most important lesson Kangana Ranaut has taught the movie industry in 2017 is that generating controversy won’t translate into box office success.
She tried to whip up a storm in the lead up to Rangoon and recent release Simran hitting cinemas, but it didn’t work. Both movies opened poorly at the box office and gave Kangana a big reality check – she isn’t the big star she thinks.
If producers of her next film Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi are smart they will get her to speak about the movie instead of colourful chapters from her personal life.

Taapsee Turvy
Twelve months ago Pink became an unexpected super hit and actress Taapsee Pannu won acclaim for her powerful performance. She followed that with a high-kicking turn in action film Naam Shabana. But if her recent bikini clad social media posts like this are anything to go by, the Judwaa 2 star seems to be reinventing herself as a Bollywood sex symbol. There is nothing wrong with that, but Taapsee is too talented to be eye candy in a male-driven movie and should carry on looking for meaningful roles.

Sheeran soars online
Pop superstar Ed Sheeran’s hit Shape Of You became the first international song to cross 200 million views on YouTube in India. The song, which has over 2.3 billion views on the video sharing site, shows the award-winning singer/songwriter is perhaps the most popular international star in the subcontinent and why he has been able to play sold out concerts there. A number of Bollywood producers have tried and failed to get him to do a Bollywood song.

Zaheer to marry
Cricketer Zaheer Khan will marry his actress fiancé Sagarika Ghatge on November 27. The wedding celebrations will be attended by big names from the world of sport and entertainment. Sagarika revealed that Zaheer had surprised her with a proposal during an impromptu break to Goa and that she will continue acting after marriage.

Jimmy Kimmel loves Jimikki Kammal
A song from south Indian film Velipadinte Pusthakam has become a firm favourite of world-famous talkshow host Jimmy Kimmel because the title sounds like his name. The catchy number Jimikki Kammal was brought to his attention on social media and has since been viewed millions of times online. The film, which stars Mohanlal, has received mixed reviews.
