AFGHAN woman Sharbat Gula, whose photograph on a National Geographic magazine cover made her famous and who was deported from Pakistan a few days ago, will travel to India soon for medical treatment.

Gula, whose picture by Steve McCurry in 1984 showed her with piercing green eyes, was removed from Pakistan and sent back to Afghanistan last Wednesday (9) on charges of falsifying identity papers.

In her 40s now, and having contracted hepatitis C, she has been offered treatment free of charge by the Indian government.

“The iconic Afghan Sharbat Gula will soon be in India for medical treatment free of cost—Thank you India for being a true friend!,” Afghan ambassador Shaida Abdali tweeted.

Gula, a mother of three, will be treated in a Bangalore hospital.
