The Conservative Friends of Bangladesh (CFOB), a group of politicians and businessmen,
will be heading out to Dhaka this month for an eight-day International Social Action for Health Project.

The group, which includes Northampton businessman Naz Islam, will visit several new projects including the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox Bazaar.

The group hopes to rebuild an existing school at the camp and see the work of sport
and wellbeing project, London Tigers. Islam, chairman of the Northampton
branch of the CFOB, said: “In Bangladesh, sport is used widely as a tool to educate individuals and communities on the risk factors associated with diseases.

“There is a significant increase in the burden of noncommunicable diseases, such as cancer and diabetes, which are related to lifestyle changes in physical inactivity, unhealthy
diets, and tobacco use.

“Raising awareness and messages of prevention is paramount, especially since individuals
who develop these diseases are less than 65 years of age.” Goldman Sachs listed Bangladesh in their “Next 11” economies, with high potential to become one of the world’s largest economies in the 21st century.

The UK exported £450 million of goods and services to Bangladesh in the last decade
including nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery, and mechanical appliances, iron, and steel and residues from waste from the food industries.

Parveen Hassan, head of communications for CFOB, said: “The UK is already one of the largest grant donors to Bangladesh and the work achieved by the Department
for International Development has yielded successes that we should be proud of, providing access to jobs and developing skills to increase income for the poorest.”
