BOLLYWOOD superstar Salman Khan has been named Barnardo’s first international ambassador.
Khan, who runs his own charitable trust called Being Human – The Salman Khan Foundation in India, made the announcement last Sunday night (17) at The O2 Arena in London during a performance of his stage show Da-Bangg.
The star said: “We are all working tirelessly to help improve the lives of the underprivileged and vulnerable children in our native countries. My foundation is a lot younger than Barnardo’s and is thousands of miles away but we share the same goal.
“This is why I was so delighted to be asked to be Barnardo’s first international ambassador. I look forward to supporting the charity’s work so it can continue to transform the lives of the UK’s most vulnerable children.”
Barnardo’s CEO Javed Khan said: “I am delighted Salman has agreed to come on board as our first international ambassador. His worldwide profile will help us increase awareness of Barnardo’s so we can help even more children and families to build a better future.”
Last week, Khan was honoured in parliament, receiving a “Global Diversity” award from Keith Vaz, Britain’s longest serving Asian MP (both pictured).
Vaz said: “Salman Khan is a role model and a hero to millions of people worldwide. He is also a well-known philanthropist and his NGO Being Human has done life-changing work supporting the underprivileged in India. It is a tremendous honour to present him with the award.”
Khan said: “It is a tremendous honour. My father would never have believed I would make it here. I would like to thank the fans for the respect they have shown me Although I have received many cinema awards, this is the first award that I have received personally so I am incredibly humbled.”
